We share the five senses—smell, hearing, sight, touch, and taste—with our pets. However, most of your pet’s senses are acute. In order to understand our four-legged companions, let’s explore how they “see” the world around them. For starters, their sense of smell can be 10,000 to 100,000 times stronger than ours. As humans, we can enter a home and smell a stew cooking; your pet can individually identify every ingredient. It’s no wonder that our pets are obsessed with sniffing everything. Like their sense of smell, their hearing is far more fine-tuned than ours — about four times as sensitive to ours. They are able to discern very subtle differences (and frequencies) in sound. Sight: They are adept at seeing at dawn, dusk, and in the dark. Their sense of touch is the very first sense to develop. Your pet’s entire body is covered in touch-sensitive nerve endings that “feel” the world around them, the wind blowing or a fly landing on their back, for example. Physical affection, petting, scratching, and massaging are mutually beneficial in providing well-being. Taste is another matter. A unique olfactory organ inside their mouth allows them to “taste” the air around the food, not the food itself. It is most important to be conscious of what our pets eat. According to Leonardo da Vinci, “The five senses are the ministers of the soul.” Our pets experience the world through embracing their senses, and they can teach us about love: how to love, how to enjoy being loved, how loving itself is an activity that generates more love, radiating out and encompassing an ever larger circle of others. Animals propel us into an "economy of abundance.” TOGETHER!

This month, ask yourself what you need to release to make space for what truly matters, as there will be unknown potential and challenges arising as we collectively experience Jupiter and Saturn uniting in air signs, with Mars returning to direct on November 13th. On November 3rd, Mercury returns to direct. It will need a few days to correct its orbit, but then we’ll be good to go. Then on November 14th, the Sun in Scorpio is sextile Jupiter in Capricorn. We’ll have a sense of moving forward, but it has stress. Then on November 28th, Neptune returns direct and may create a sense of confusion. The grand finale is on November 30th, when Gemini Full Moon coincides with a lunar eclipse, creating space for a new chapter in your life. You may feel like a veil is lifting and you have a new sense of clarity.

ARIES  Mar 21 – Apr 19 Fire

Anything goes this month, as long as it brings buckets of energy and excitement. As the first sign of the Zodiac, it is apt that your pet lives by the motto “Me First,” and it would be best that you do not wait for the “please.” Wanting to be first, our spirited one tends to leap before looking. Running outside is your warmhearted companion’s idea of Utopia. So, leave your devices (yes, including your phone)—they are all replaceable, but your best friend is not), get outside, throw the football, and watch your star catch it (and burst it, if at all possible).

TAURUS  Apr 20 – May 20 Earth

The sign of the Taurus is the Bull; however, the turtle is also an apt description. Your slow-moving (what’s with the rush?) companion is ruled by Venus, gifting oodles of love and gentleness. This month his shyness will be more pronounced. Provide plenty of comfort and conversation, and play Beethoven. Your down-to-earth butterball has a vault tucked away somewhere. They are the Goldman Sachs of the bone and toy world, forever investing and hoarding. His taste is five stars in both food and amenities. Free-range chicken or budget biscuit? No contest. Please don’t insult him with cheap rubbish.

GEMINI  May 21 – June 20 Air

Have you gotten a Twitter account or YouTube videos of your radiant celebrity yet? There’s a particular look in the Gemini’s eyes that gleams attentiveness, alertness, and intelligence. Blah, blah, blah. Your pet has the gift of gab. From November 3rd to November 10th she will reach a whole new level of chatter. Her favorite show is DogTV or news stories about cats (most likely Sagittarius) stuck in trees. She loves to laugh and wants you to laugh along with her.

CANCER  June 21 – July 22 Water

Your Cancer is craving reassurance and feeling a bit overwhelmed this month. Add a comforting blanket or treasure to her growing collection (in the eyes of this furry companion, possession is nine-tenths of the law). Suggest a tiny toy or treasure that can be nurtured. She knows that she runs the household and is very levelheaded making sure all is well—and finds conflict and drama a complete waste of time. She secretly wants to be your sous chef and will assist with any tasting duties required.

LEO  July 23 – Aug 22 Fire

Her Majesty the Queen (you are Prince Philip, walking after her, hands clasped behind your back) has energy to burn and is feeling rambunctious, which translates to 24/7 fetch. Relationships take compromise, and your Leo is not that interested in that art. Her bark or meow is an instruction. But how she makes you laugh in pure delight. Pomp and circumstance (add tiara, please) is de rigueur this month. Your furry companion has an exceptional quality: a deep-set faith in humanity.

VIRGO  Aug 23 – Sept 22 Earth

The Virgo pet is the most reliable, friendly, and honest sign of the Zodiac. By association, just being in the company of your little star makes you a better human. This month, your furry friend’s creativity will be heightened. Whatever “sculpture” (thinking: masterpiece made from a favorite chew toy that has been gnawed to perfection) is presented to you, provide lots of praise to lift her confidence. Mercury, Virgo’s ruler, stations retrograde on November 3rd. Your already calm furry one will enter Buddha-like status. Play soothing music, meditate, and chill with your cold-nosed teacher.

LIBRA  Sept 23 – Oct 22 Air

In the third week of November, Venus, Libra’s ruling planet, enters Scorpio. The abundance of love will be heavenly. Bathe in this contagious emotion and feel the unconditionalness, and you will glow from the inside out. Now, will you please replace that old blanket in the basket and buy the silk sheets that she desires? After all, your elegant companion needs 10 hours of beauty sleep and yearns for luxury. Libras are rattled by unfairness and bad manners. Be aware if you are singling out other four-legged pets at your Libra’s expense.

SCORPIO  Oct 23 – Nov 21 Water

It is quite possible, this month, that your Scorpio pet disappears for longer and more frequent stretches of time and then reappears—when he is good and ready. If you speak harshly to your sensitive four-legged chum, you can expect a no-show for at least 24 hours. But that same sensitivity is focused on your feelings and emotions, and he will not leave your side during upsetting moments. Jupiter and Pluto (Scorpio’s ruling planet) both station direct and form their final (of three this year) conjunction on November 12th. Determination will be heightened…and it will indeed be a force to be reckoned with.

SAGITTARIUS  Nov 22 – Dec 21 Fire

Full of character and highly amusing is the theme for November. Your lovable furry companion flits from one interest to another, unable to decide what she likes. Dealing with a split personality is never boring! It is your (human) responsibility to sort out the confusion: “Am I dog, cat, horse, fox…” befuddlement. Being outside (preferring to run, untethered) will bring serious tail wagging. Try to confine or restrict your free-spirited pet at your own peril: She knows exactly how to retaliate, with disastrous results. Driven by a primitive urge for self-protection, beyond the immediate environment, it would not be unusual if you hardly ever see her. The Sag likes affection but hates being smothered.

CAPRICORN  Dec 22 – Jan 19 Earth

Transiting Mercury in Saturn (ruling planet) and opposing Uranus in Taurus will magnify your Cap’s methodical and grounding characteristics. Loyal but also stand-offish, he prefers to be approached and courted. A bit of a pack rat, your four-legged friend will show you his latest conquest before stashing or devouring it because he feels that you appreciate his endeavors and doesn’t want to disappoint. Your pet’s standards are high, and he aspires to never putting a paw out of place. Personal interaction is very important. He is instinctively understanding of human frailty and is generous in overlooking your shortcomings. Your furry one will never give up on you.

AQUARIUS  Jan 20 – Feb 18 Air

Your eccentric pet prefers chocolate to bones and takes incredible enjoyment in taking a bath. Regardless of gender, your furry one is a tomboy, wanting to spend hours in nature running and climbing. She is good-natured and intelligent enough to recognize the advantages of sharing life with humans, but still maintains aloofness. Mid-month the New Moon in Scorpio hits the stage, enhancing Aquarians’ magnetism, and she will want to add to her collection of friends. Your four-legged socialite has an incredibly strange allure that attracts a battery of acquaintances of all shapes and sizes, from all walks of life. The party must go on!

PISCES  Feb 19 – March 20 Water

Extending from October into the first two weeks of November, Mercury is still in a challenging aspect to Uranus, which makes your Piscean feel confused. Stable and inconsistent, fun-loving and moody, friendly but uncommunicative. Your “dupli-pet” sees double and does everything twice in case something was overlooked the first time. “The devil is in the details” is her motto. She will be particularly sensitive and has the capability to see inside the souls of others. Your furry one’s awareness will be enhanced. This is a good month to teach a new trick, like saying your prayers.
