As we approach the end of 2020, we may not have the words to describe how we feel. It certainly has been an unprecedented year in just about every way. In all of this, in all the jumble of the world and all the things in it, who understands my sadness? Who can interpret my joy? Who can recognize my fear or measure my worry? Your dog. The dog is a certainty in uncertain times, a constant, like gravity or the speed of light. It is profound that our dogs choose us. It is a love story.

The great Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh said (on the power of our awareness): “The greatest gift you can give another is your attention.” Dogs are certainly paying attention to humans. Over thousands of years, evolution selected and sharpened in dogs the traits most likely to succeed in harmony with humans.

When your tail-wagging best friend is looking at you, his oxytocin is going up and yours is too. If you have ever seen your pup look at you and you don’t have any idea why (fed— check, walked—check), you are being hugged by his eyes. We started being attentive to dogs because they have been studying us, mirroring the goodness in us, which is why we want to hang out with them. Dogs are everywhere humans are, and they’re absolutely killing it evolutionarily.

On December 14th there is a New Moon and a total Solar Eclipse in Sagittarius. This aspect brings mental alertness, quick thinking, adaptability, and curiosity. The pièce de résistance this month (and in fact this year) is the Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius on December 21st. They will be only 0.1 degrees apart. These two planets will be closer in our sky than they’ve been since 1623. Throughout history, the Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn has been linked to the fall of royalty, strong passions, and great pride. And by the way, December 21st is also the winter solstice.

We have entered the Age of Aquarius (a new age happens every 2,100 years), which is strongly linked to technology, community, truth, and love. Aquarius is visionary and creative, but rebellious too. Aquarius’s job is to challenge authority, tear down existing structures, and replace the outdated with something better. This sign acts in sudden and unexpected ways, thanks to being ruled by Uranus, the planet of surprises.

ARIES  Mar 21 – Apr 19 Fire

This month starts with a nice grand trine of Aries with the Sun and Saturn, which will have a calming effect on your pet. Well, calm in Aries standards means a little less reactive (he will continue to walk you, not the other way around). Your companion still thrives on your attention. Aries are very playful and will delight even the crankiest human. The need to be in the spotlight is paramount. Your Aries is loyal to the bone and rather expects the same loyalty in return. He has the biggest heart and a loving spirit that is irresistible, but leave your pup alone too long at your peril. You will have a scrappy, passive, aggressive Aries when you return. (Pee on the Persian rug AGAIN, Fluffy?) You may want to consider playing soothing music while you are away.

TAURUS  Apr 20 – May 20 Earth

Mid-month, Jupiter is square with Taurus, which may cause some restlessness. Your Taurus can be described in one word: cozy. So, to relax your furry one, curl up together and talk sweet nothings in a soft voice. Lounging is your Taurus’s favorite activity, and next favorite “exercise” is being touched, cuddled, and stroked. Plan a spa day at home. Make sure to plan the entire treatment from start to finish beforehand so everything is prepared and goes smoothly. Follow the special spa with some treats the two of you can share together. You and your “bull” will feel very grounded.

GEMINI  May 21 – June 20 Air

The keyword for Gemini pets is fun. At the beginning of December, Mercury opposite Sun transit brings increased mental activity. Curious George was surely a Gemini. Life is not boring with your furry smart aleck. She is on her game throughout the month, imitating sounds and habits of other animals as well as relishing being your daredevil. She will wow you with her ability to jump through hoops, leap, and flip. Your sparkly one would take great delight in a toy that allows her swatting motions.

CANCER  June 21 – July 22 Water

Mid-December, Venus enters Sagittarius, which will make your sensitive pet relish more attention—which you will gladly supply, because your furry friend is overflowing in sweetness. Tummy rubs are your pet’s weakness. Cancer rules the home, so don’t be surprised if your pet makes little “nests” throughout the house. On December 20th, Mercury enters Capricorn. Your pet will be more communicative. You will find him to be quite inspiring. December wraps up on a high note: a full moon in nurturing and protective Cancer. Snuggle with your pet and play music or make soothing sounds.

LEO  July 23 – Aug 22 Fire

On December 14th, the New Moon is in Sagittarius, which will expand your Leo’s theatrics. Being on stage is second nature to her, and she is feeling like a superstar this month. Sit back, enjoy the show, and provide buckets of compliments (treats are also greatly appreciated). The total Solar Eclipse will intensify her exuberance. Spend as much time as you can with her on (and around) December 21st. Your furry friend is the perfect antidote for the Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn.

VIRGO  Aug 23 – Sept 22 Earth

The activity in Aquarius this month and Venus trines Neptune will intensify your Virgo’s love. Affection will be overflowing, and you will receive extra licks. You will never find your mellow four-legged friend knocking over the garbage or chewing your Jimmy Choos. Quite the opposite: Your Virgo is a bit finicky, especially when it comes to cleanliness. She wants her water and food bowl to be kept sparkling clean. Your furry love bundle enjoys pleasant surprises: Plan a holiday adventure, a new toy and/or a new trick. .

LIBRA  Sept 23 – Oct 22 Air

On December 10th, the Sun trines Mars, bringing enthusiasm and the desire to impress you. Your furry friend’s magnetic charm and charism will be glowing brightly. Expect to be stopped on the street by admirers furnishing ample compliments. He knows he is adorable, though, so keep the spoiling in check. Your four-legged enticer has difficulty understanding the word “no.” Libras are the Zodiac’s peacekeepers. He will get anxious around conflict from humans or other pets, so if tension arises at home, take your Libra for a car ride.

SCORPIO  Oct 23 – Nov 21 Water

Your whip-smart and sexy Scorpio’s ability to manipulate you increases this month, so expect to be going for extra walks or offering a second bowl of food. She is deep, emotional, and passionate. It would be extra enjoyable for both of you to listen to music together. If you play an instrument, all the better. Then watch her tail, which is capable of expressing more feeling than any other pet’s can. Enjoy the impressive show. (Note: Videoing is encouraged.) During the Great Conjunction, your psychic Scorpio will make it clear when something is being “heard” or “seen.” Not to worry: Most of the invisible beings are harmless.

SAGITTARIUS  Nov 22 – Dec 21 Fire

Happy birthday! Life with your Sag is never boring. This month your pet will feel more restlessness than usual. Energetic exercise and learning a new, amusing trick or two would be the antidote. Regarding learning new tricks: Your four-legged companion has a mind of his own, so more training time and treats are required. If he could put paw to paper, he would have a ton on his to-do list. Wanting to be everywhere at the same time, your Sag experiences continual internal conflict. On December 14th, the total solar eclipse will bring a zest for adventure.

CAPRICORN  Dec 22 – Jan 19 Earth

In the beginning of the month, the sun will be transiting Cap’s 12th house, which may result in a state of confusion. Your pet acts like a pedigree, even if she isn’t. Well mannered, reserved, and always eager to please, she will want to be by your side. That said, she prefers when you dress your best and may be uncooperative when you choose to slop around in your slippers and robe. On December 21st, Capricorn season begins! She will explore the world with an ambitious new burst of energy.

AQUARIUS  Jan 20 – Feb 18 Air

Socialization. The collection of friends (a mixture of species) that your Aquarian acquired last month will now be brought to a higher level of acquaintanceship. The solar eclipse blasts through the Aquarian extroverted 11th house on December 14th. Lead the way, Aquarius. It’s what you were born to do. When alone, your tranquil pet will quietly get on with life…investigating, discovering, and wondering. When you catch up with him, you may find a little chaos that has been created peacefully. Your furry friend always manages to discover a way around obstacles. He will get his way and brilliantly guide you to see that that is the best for everyone.

PISCES  Feb 19 – March 20 Water

The topic this month is sensitivity coupled with confusion—a rather complicated place to be. To soothe your pet, have plenty of water for her to play in (buckets, or fill the bathtub). By December 21st, Capricorn moves into Pisces’ 10th house. Wanting to start a dog rock and roll band is seriously being considered. Another option would be writing the next Call of the Wild. Your four-legged companion has a lot to say. She also dreams of sending out invites, sealed with a paw, for a neighborhood party. Overall, this month your pet has an unpredictable soul and will change their mind from one moment to the next, wanting to please all at the same time.
